What Are Boiled Peanuts?

Boiled peanuts are raw or green peanuts simmered in a salty brine until they become soft, with a texture similar to beans. A Southern staple, boiled peanuts can be enjoyed hot or cold, often directly from the shell. While the traditional stovetop method takes hours, the Instant Pot cuts the process down significantly.

Why Make Boiled Peanuts in the Instant Pot?

Using the Instant Pot makes boiled peanuts easier and faster to prepare. Here are some of the top reasons to try this method:

  • Speed: The Instant Pot significantly reduces the cooking time, allowing you to enjoy your boiled peanuts much sooner compared to traditional methods.
  • Even Cooking: The pressure cooker ensures the peanuts cook evenly, resulting in a perfect texture every time.
  • Hands-Off Cooking: Once you’ve set the time, you can walk away and let the Instant Pot handle everything. No need to stir or check frequently.

Ingredient Highlights

  • Raw or Green Peanuts: Green peanuts are freshly harvested and cook faster. If you’re using raw peanuts, they may require a bit more time but will still work well in the Instant Pot.
  • Salt: A generous amount of salt is essential for creating a flavorful brine. While it may seem like a lot, most of it stays in the water, ensuring the peanuts are perfectly salted.
  • Garlic: This adds a rich, savory flavor that elevates the entire dish.
  • Optional Spices: For those who love a kick of heat, adding crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper gives the peanuts a Cajun twist.

Creative Ways to Enjoy Boiled Peanuts

Boiled peanuts are delicious on their own, but there are plenty of creative ways to elevate this Southern snack to new levels. Whether you’re enjoying them at home or serving them at a gathering, here are a few fun ideas to try:

  • Snack Boards: Incorporate boiled peanuts into a savory snack board alongside pickles, cheese, olives, and charcuterie. The salty, tender texture of the peanuts provides a perfect contrast to crunchy or creamy accompaniments.
  • Toss in a Salad: For a Southern twist on your favorite salad, toss a few boiled peanuts in for a unique flavor and texture. They work well in heartier salads with greens, tomatoes, and onions.
  • Pair with Spicy Dips: Boiled peanuts go great with spicy dips like sriracha mayo or buffalo sauce. The creamy heat of the dip complements the saltiness of the peanuts, making for an addictive snack combination.
  • Add to Stir-Fries: Give your next stir-fry a Southern kick by adding boiled peanuts toward the end of cooking. Their soft texture and salty flavor bring an unexpected element to veggie or meat-based stir-fries.

How Long Do Instant Pot Boiled Peanuts Last?

Boiled peanuts can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. They can also be frozen for longer storage, allowing you to make large batches and enjoy them later. When reheating, simply warm them up in the brine for that freshly boiled texture.

Pro Tips for Perfect Boiled Peanuts

  • Don’t Skip the Garlic: Garlic is essential for adding depth to the flavor.
  • Watch the Salt: Though the brine may seem overly salty, most of it won’t be absorbed. Adjust based on your taste but remember that boiled peanuts rely on this saltiness for their flavor.
  • Spice It Up: If you enjoy bold flavors, try adding Cajun seasonings to your boiled peanuts.
